Position Overview
AUA Press seeks a skilled bilingual Copy Editor to ensure accuracy, clarity, consistency, and editorial integrity of its English and Armenian language scholarly publications. This position requires editorial precision, familiarity with academic style guides, and the ability to collaborate with authors, translators, and production staff.
Primary Responsibilities
- Edit and proofread academic content in both English and Armenian.
- Ensure clarity, accuracy, consistency, and correct grammar, punctuation, and syntax in all edited materials.
- Review and edit bibliographies, citations, footnotes, and references according to appropriate academic style (e.g., Chicago, APA, MLA).
- Verify names, dates, terminology, and facts within manuscripts.
- Collaborate with authors, translators, and designers to resolve textual ambiguities or inconsistencies.
- Conduct side-by-side review of translated texts to ensure accuracy and idiomatic fluency.
- Provide quality control and proofreading support for printed layouts and digital typeset files.
- Liaise with academic programs and institutional units to gather editorial requirements and project details.
- Participate in project planning meetings to establish editorial timelines and deliverables.
- Maintain detailed editing logs or checklists to ensure project tracking and quality benchmarks.
- Stay informed on current language trends, changes in academic style guides, and publishing best practices.
- Train or mentor junior editors, student assistants, or interns involved in AUA Press publications.
- Conduct pre-press checks for final approval of printed materials.
- Perform other editorial or administrative tasks as assigned by the Director of AUA Press.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Armenian Studies, Journalism, Communications, or a related field. Advanced (master’s) degree, preferred.
- Native or near-native fluency in both English and Armenian, with exceptional editing and writing capabilities.
- Familiarity with editorial, university press, or scholarly publishing required.
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational aptitude, and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Knowledge of style guides (Chicago, MLA, APA) and editorial tools is an advantage.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with CMS, InDesign, etc., a plus.
